What it measures

This final monthly reading reports the change in the value of Canadian retail sales from the previous month. It completes the same month's estimate after earlier preliminary information, and gives the Bank of Canada a view of household spending against its inflation and growth outlook.

Why it moves the CAD

A strong final result can support the Canadian dollar if it confirms resilient demand, but the earlier preliminary reading often means much of the news is already known. It generally matters less than a large surprise in CPI, employment or GDP.
