What it measures

This monthly rate measures the share of Canada's labour force that is without a job and actively seeking one. The Bank of Canada watches it for signs of spare capacity that may ease wage and inflation pressure; a lower rate is usually stronger, provided participation has not fallen sharply.

Why it moves the CAD

A lower-than-expected rate can support the Canadian dollar by suggesting a tighter labour market and less need for rate cuts. A higher rate can weaken it, although the employment and participation details are important.
